Staff Design Engineer

About the role

GitHub is looking for a Staff Design Engineer to lead the creation of high‑quality front‑end experiences that power its developer platform. Based in San Francisco, you will bridge design, engineering, and product strategy to ship scalable, accessible, and AI‑enhanced features used by millions of developers worldwide.

Responsibilities

• Deliver polished front‑end implementations with a strong focus on quality, detail, and adaptability to emerging technologies.
• Rapidly prototype and explore interactive concepts, especially around new UX patterns and AI‑driven design languages.
• Contribute to and evolve design systems, ensuring consistency and scalability across products.
• Integrate design system components to maintain product alignment with GitHub’s brand standards.
• Collaborate closely with product, design, and engineering teams throughout ideation, development, and launch.
• Champion accessibility by applying WCAG guidelines and delivering inclusive experiences.
• Provide technical mentorship to design engineers and influence cross‑team technical decisions.
• Stay curious about AI, LLMs, and emerging front‑end capabilities to identify new opportunities.

Eligibility

• 10+ years of front‑end engineering experience, or equivalent combinations of education and experience (e.g., Bachelor’s + 8 years, Master’s + 6 years, Ph.D. + 4 years).
• Proficiency with modern front‑end technologies such as React, TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
• Hands‑on experience with design and prototyping tools like Figma and familiarity with AI‑powered design workflows.
• Demonstrated ability to work on large‑scale, open‑source or developer‑tool products.
• Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
